What is wrestling to me? Well, yeah, when I was younger I really loved the (former) WWF and it's female wrestlers. I always remember roughhousing with my brothers and wanting them to take my seriously, but because I was a girl they never really did. I wanted very badly to be just like the wrestler Chyna, I loved her size and muscle, attitude and display of awesome feminine kick-ass in a male dominated sport.
What a badass.
So, for a long time I did the whole backyard wrestling thing with my brothers and their friends, they would do crazy stunts - jump off roofs and ladders, hit each other with metal chairs, wooden baseball bats, 2x4 planks of wood and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Needless to say, I never really had Chyna's body type, especially when I was a young girl and all the boys thought I couldn't handle the pressure. I fought it at first and joined in, beat on some boys but never really got engaged with in return, they felt bad beating on the little girl.
little baby me
I guess it's since then I've aspired to be large.
Now that I'm older I realized that those stunts aren't as practical as they are frightfully entertaining and I forgot about the sport for a while. Then I discovered this fantastic group of folk who run an underground wrestling party in the heart of New York, and then I fell in love all over again. I went to my first Grapple Den party and I was blinded by the light, no longer able to turn away and squash those childhood curiosities I had about wrestling. Here I could wrestle with men and women and not get turned down for a real, heart-racing, sweaty competitive match. I attended the trainings, I went to the parties, I followed competitions and I was hooked.
At this awesome party I met a lady by the name of VeVe Lane and discovered the Doom Maidens and session wrestling. What is session wrestling? Well, I've always heard the phrase "Love what you do and you'll never work a day in your life" and now I understand it. Session Wrestling might be 'work' for some gals, but for me it's something I truly love to do. I understand the adoration for the sport and awe-inspiring women behind it... and you've gotta pay off college somehow, right? I'm very lucky to have fallen into the profession as I have, I'm not jaded and I'm not desperate but I am in love. I'm having such a great time riding these experiences and adventures in a profession I adore.
Grappling has been a big life and goal shifter for me, as Mr. D has told me about 80% of this country avoids physical activity on a daily basis. I used to support that percentage from in front of my computer screen. Though since that spark went off, I've been training and wrestling and moving - and even if I haven't seen a dramatic physical change I have seen many healthy perception changes. I've always been talented in the strength department without any training or much activity, but now I'm really curious to see what I can do when I really hit the iron. Over the course of the next few weeks I'll start really getting to the gym and lifting for strength gain. I'll post my current measurements and stats soon and I'm very interested to see what changes.
